Moths: how to get rid of them

Tips from a Knitwear Designer | November 2024

Moths? An alarming discovery in any knitwear drawer.

Unfortunately moths love knitwear as much as we do. The tell tale signs you might be wondering? An unsuspecting hole or a sprinkling of orange dust.

If you've noticed either of the above or simply want to know how to prevent them, here is what we do, naturally.

step 01.

make sure your knit is clean before it is put away (moths love little bits of food).  if you do spot a little hole, a moth, or a speck of orange dust, freeze the effected knit for 48 hours. this will kill any eggs and break up the life cycle.

step 02.

take them out of the freezer and check for holes, and mend them before they have a chance to get bigger. see how to mend a hole, here.

step 03.

handwash the knits to remove any remaining debris.

This should nip the outbreak in the bud, keeping your knitwear safe without any nasty chemicals.
